So why do I choose to incorporate dandelions as well as tallow and coconut oil in my skincare? Well, believe it or not, dandelions have wonderful benefits for the skin. When applied to the skin, the extract of the dandelion acts as an antibacterial, germicide and anti-fungal ingredient. Dandelions help detox the skin, clearing out pores, helping rid the skin of acne and helping prevent future acne breakouts. Well, being 40 this year, yes I still deal with hormonal breakouts and I have a teenager who’s skin has drastically improved since using this mixture of dandelions, tallow and coconut oil with the added boost of a few essential oils.

Tallow is a powerful moisturizer loaded with a wealth of nutrients, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Tallow contains Vitamins A, D, K, and E. Antioxidants fight free radical damage. Tallow also has anti-inflammatory properties, doesn’t clog pores, has antimicrobial properties and the vitamins in tallow can help produce collagen. Coconut oil is great for moisturizing dry skin, reducing inflammation which may result from UVB rays, promotes wound healing, and has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. The combination of all 3, with whichever essential oils I choose to help enhance these benefits, I’ve found to be wonderful to incorporate in my skincare routine.

So let’s get started. First gather your ingredients:
• 1/2 cup tallow
• 1/2 cup coconut oil
• 1/4 cup dandelions
• Optional: essential oils

You’ll want to use a bowl or glass measuring cup as a double boiler. Place it in a pot of water on the stove and melt down your ingredients in the cup or bowl you’ve placed in the pot of water.

Once the oils are liquified, transfer to a glass jar or container that can sit in the sun for the day.

Let your dandelions infuse the oil in the sunshine for about 5-6 hours. After, strain liquid back into bowl or glass measuring cup and discard the dandelion petals.

Now, if desired, you can add 10-12 drops of whatever essential oils you may want to enhance the moisturizer. I like to make multiple jars with different skin benefits. Frankincense + Patchouli for facial and body moisturizer. Elemi + Lavender or Tea Tree + Lavender for acne. Citronella and / or Lemongrass to use as a bug repellent for the Spring + Summer months. And lastly, a sleepy-time blend for the kids with Sleepyze or a combo of Lavender + Vetiver. All you need is a small amount too! A little goes a long way, making this blend very eco-friendly. For the face, I use a pea-sized amount and it moisturizes my entire face. For bug-repellant, we put a swipe behind each ear, on the wrists and inner ankles. For sleep, rub a tiny dollop on the bottoms of feet.

This makes approximately 6 small canning containers – my kids already stole 2 to use when I took this pic, oh well!
