It’s become somewhat of a tradition to have cinnamon rolls for Christmas. If you’ve been to the stores lately, you’ve probably noticed the drastic increase in price in pre-made cinnamon rolls. Holy cow have they gone up!
So, for a more cost-effective, and much tastier option, we’ve decided to make our own. These are pretty straightforward, my 11 year old made them on her own while I simply gave her the next steps.

For the dough you will need:
– 4 to 5 cups flour (you will gradually add more as you knead)
– 1/3 cup granulated sugar
– 2 packets yeast (approx. 4 tsp.)
– 1 tsp. salt
– 1 1/2 cups water
– 6 tbsp. unsalted butter
– 1 lg egg

Mix 2 cups of the flour with the sugar, salt + yeast with a wooden spoon. In the microwave warm up the water and butter for approximately 30 seconds until the water is warm and butter is slightly melted.

Pour wet ingredients into dry mix, add egg and mix together. It will be tacky, you can sprinkle in a little flour until the dough no longer sticks to the bowl. Dump dough out onto a floured surface and knead, continuing to add flour until no longer sticky.

Place in bowl, cover and let sit in a warm spot for 45 minutes to an hour.

Roll dough out on floured surface with a rolling pin into a large rectangle.
For filling:
– 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
– 1/2 cup brown sugar
– 2 tbsp. cinnamon

Pour melted butter on dough, then sprinkle on the cinnamon sugar mixture, distributing evenly while leaving about a 1/2 inch border around.

Roll into a log and cut. Depending on the size, you may get anywhere from 8-12 pieces. Place in a 9×13 buttered baking dish and cover. Let sit for 1 hour to let dough rise again.

Pre-heat oven to 350⁰. Once dough has doubled, uncover and pour mixture of 1/2 cup heavy cream + 1 tsp. vanilla over rolls before placing in oven.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until tops are golden.

For icing:
– 4 oz. cream cheese, room temp.
– 1/4 cup butter, room temp.
– 1 cup powdered sugar
– 2 tsp. vanilla

Whip together with hand mixer until smooth. Dollop over warm cinnamon rolls and enjoy!
